Frederick Showcase v.3 : Cheshi EP release & Stitch Early’s list

Before we get to some Frederick music scene awesomeness, Area 31 is killing it, continuing to pack the joint with their Cinemondays East screenings (“Fantastic Planet” and “Lola” just screened) and their Select Screening series latest showing of “Mifune: The Last Samurai” last weekend.  They’re showing Wim Wenders’ “Paris, Texas” as part of their experimental/cult/obscure/arthouse free series next Monday, Feb 20th.

more after the jump…

BTW: western machines just added a Film Events page, including February’s Weinberg’s Flying Dog series screening of “Fargo,” and Frederick Film Fest’s Oscar Nominated Shorts & Docs in late February.

Ok let’s get to it: last week western machines quasi-reviewed Cheshi’s new upcoming and highly anticipated EP (by quasi-reviewed, I mean reflections and free associating upon listening to the indie-doom sonic-ness of it all).  This Thursday Cheshi will be making the EP available for the 3rd Frederick Music Showcase.  The FMS has made waves: v1 Heavy Lights and Old Indian on that big stage in front of a surprisingly well attended night 3 years ago, a VERY VERY cold 4 degree night. v2 Retro/Ricole became THE 1st hip hop band to perform at the old lady we know as the Weinberg.

V3 has some very bright spots – and a questionable choice in an 80’s cover band. But I won’t give too hard a time, especially when Stitch Early brings in his underground hip hop chops (to be only the 2nd hip hop act in the Weinberg’s history) and the dark wave hypnotic amazingness that is Cheshi hitting it’s stride at the 90 year old theater. In another nod to the future, Bad Seeds Rising -alums of the Frederick Rock School and having toured with Warped tour  -will also perform.

Here’s set times for Thursday

  • Stitch Early: 7 p.m.
  • Guys In Thin Ties: 8 p.m.
  • Cheshi: 9 p.m.
  • Bad Seed Rising: 10 p.m.

Tix are$10 today and $15 at the door.  Stitch Early, btw, knows his music. Stitch (aka Lorenzo Nichols) submitted to the celebrity playlist at the Frederick Playlist and here’s his picks.

If you haven’t seen Sam Tressler IV’s take on Cheshi’s Bug Dance, it’s definitely worth checking out.
